The Robinson Settlers

200th anniversary of the Robinson Settlers Emigration Scheme

We commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Robinson Settlers Emigration Scheme in 2025, with the addition of a very special exhibition. Direct descendants tracing their heritage, following in the footsteps of their ancestors visited Ireland to honour their journey and maintain their connection to their roots.
The settlers, who left from the Ballyhoura region of North County Cork, were successfully established in various townships in Upper Canada, including Emily, Ennismore, Douro, Otonabee, Asphodel, Smith, Ops, Verulam, Marmora, and Bathurst. They were provided with land, provisions, and support to help them build new lives.

About The Exhibition

The influx of Irish settlers significantly shaped the cultural and demographic landscape of the Peterborough region. The establishment of new townships and the renaming of Scott’s Plains to Peterborough are notable examples of this impact. The descendants of the settlers continue to honour their heritage through various community activities and organizations. The 200th-year commemoration events further highlight the enduring legacy of the Peter Robinson settlers. You can find more about the fascinating period of Irish History in the Peter Robinson Settlers Exhibition.

A wonderful way to learn more about Irish emigration (including forced!) and to learn how this little town was once vital to cruise lines and mail delivery. I’ve heard a lot about the Titanic and Luisitania, but I learned new things at this museum.

I’m glad we stopped in while in port with a cruise. Very nice museum that covers the full history of Irish emigration. It keeps your attention because it’s on a more personal level. You meet real people and hear real stories.
