discover the stories of the early emigrants

We love having School tours where students can come and learn all about the fascinating history of Irish Emigration from this famous seaport town. Cobh, or Queenstown as it was known, played a major role as the port of departure for over 3 million people. During the tour, students will discover the stories of the early emigrants who ventured to the British overseas colonies, such as Virginia and the New England states, as well as the West Indies.

They will also learn about those who were sent as convicts to the far distant colony of Australia. The tour will also delve into the period of the Great Famine from 1845-1851, when countless individuals fled the country due to starvation and disease. Many of them made their way to Canada and then onwards to the United States.

Of course, our exhibition wouldn’t be complete without exploring the incredible tales of two of the most famous shipping disasters of the early 20th century: the Titanic and The Lusitania. And to make the tour even more fun, there’s an enjoyable quiz for students to take part in.

A wonderful way to learn more about Irish emigration (including forced!) and to learn how this little town was once vital to cruise lines and mail delivery. I’ve heard a lot about the Titanic and Luisitania, but I learned new things at this museum.

I’m glad we stopped in while in port with a cruise. Very nice museum that covers the full history of Irish emigration. It keeps your attention because it’s on a more personal level. You meet real people and hear real stories.
